Measure With Confidence
Finding the perfect piece of furniture is only the first step. Measuring takes fifteen minutes. Getting a sofa back out of a stairwell takes considerably longer. Take the measurements first, and the rest of the process looks after itself. Follow our video guide above, or review our quick step-by-step instructions below.
01
Check Dimensions & Footprint
You can view the width, height, and depth of the couch you are interested in by checking the weight & dimensions tab on the product page. For sofas with splayed legs or arms that angle outward, add one to two inches to each side to get the true floor footprint. Use painters' tape to mark the width and depth on the floor of your room, so you can visualize how much space the product will take up.
02
Calculate Diagonal Width
You'll have to measure the diagonal width because a sofa carried upright through a doorway is rarely truly vertical. The moment it tilts, the diagonal width across the frame becomes the critical measurement, not the listed height. To get the diagonal width, just measure from opposite corners.
03
Measure the Delivery Path
You’ll need to make sure you plan the path of how you are bringing the couch into your space and ensure it’s clear of any obstacles. Make sure the piece can fit through all entry points, including doors, elevators, stairwells, and hallways. When measuring doorways, measure the opening at three points: top, middle, and base of the frame. The narrowest reading is the one that counts. Also measure from floor to the top of the frame and measure the clearance length around corners.
04
Compare & Add Clearances
Compare the depth or width of the couch to the width of the entry points, and the diagonal width of the couch to the height of the entry points. We recommend adding six inches of clearances to ensure product can easily move along the delivery path.
